4th Annual Undergraduate Scholarship Committee

The Undergraduate Scholarship Committee held its 4th Annual Summer Event on Sunday, August 10th, 2008.  This event brings the former and current scholarship recipients together for a day of culture and networking.

This year we focused on the technique of networking and how that could be done effectively with a little knowledge of sports. It has been said that business networking stems from simple human interaction. In business it is critical to build relationships and network in order to have support for your goals. Many young professionals find discomfort in not knowing how to start a conversation, worrying that they may not be knowledgeable about a topic and not feel comfortable enough to speak up. This is the case for many young women in relation to sports. Our goal this year was to expose them to sports and have them see that it is not as intimidating as they might think.

What better place than attending a baseball game, and being introduced to American’s pastime. We did this by attending a game at Shea Stadium, one of the oldest ballparks in the major leagues and soon to be replaced with a modern stadium next season.  The Mets even welcomed the Financial Women’s Association to the game by displaying our organization’s name on the big screen.

The young women enjoyed the day learning all about hitting and pitching and the techniques that go into the game. They also learned how simple conversations can begin with the simple words “I attended a baseball game at Shea.”  Through our interaction that day, we met individuals who attended schools that we had friends at, and other connections that would not have been made otherwise. The participants may not have come away experts in the game, but they came away with the feeling and confidence that they did learn about the game, and could discuss it with anyone.

Next year!! Tennis Anyone??
